Photo-identification catalogues of cetaceans

2012-2013

Participation in the project “Development of photo-identification catalogues for cetaceans in the Spanish Mediterranean.” CIRCE. Funded by Fundación Biodiversidad.

Aims:

The overalll aim of this project is to be able to manage in a more direct way the cetacean populations off the coasts of the Spanish Mediterranean through the development of unified photo-identification catalogues for long-finned pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, killer whales, sperm whales and Risso's dolphins.

These catalogues will allow, inter alia:

- To define management units for these species based on spatial modelling and definition of social structure.

- To define survival rates for bottlenose dolphins, long-finned pilot whales and killer whales over the last 5-10 years.

- To offer to the buisiness world focussed on the marine environment a series of tools that will allow them to know better the environment they explote and which would allow to set the basis towards a future management of each management unit.

- The web page of the project will be an information window for the general public.
